About Joomla®

Joomla® is an open-source Content Management System that enables you to make your own updates and site changes.

Q: What is a Content Management System?

A:  A CMS is basically a template built on a database. It has a Control Panel that allows the user to easily edit text or add images.

Q: Where can a Joomla site be hosted?

A: Not all hosting services can handle the PHP and SQL requirements of Joomla. Here is the company we use and recommend for domain name purchase and hosting a Joomla (or any other type) site:

Q: What is Open Source?

A: Open-source means that the code is freely-available to web developers. There is a world-wide Joomla community of users and developers, and users benefit from a wide variety of applications that are developed especially for use within Joomla.

Q: What does a Joomla site look like?

A: Joomla comes with some standard templates, and a large number of templates are available commercially, so your site can be completely customized to your requirements. Click on the Joomla® link to have a look at the basic template. Look at the Website Samples for some ideas on how your Joomla site can look.

Q: Can I do e-commerce with Joomla?

A:  Yes! There are a couple of excellent applications that can be added to your Joomla site to enable your e-commerce business.

Q:  How much does it cost?

A: That depends on how complicated your site needs are:

    1. Is your content already written?

    2. Do you know how you want or need your site to be organized?

    3. Is it an e-commerce site? Please see the E-Commerce section for variables.

    4. Are you able to manage your own SEO and FTP?

If you already have written content and edited images and simply need your basic Joomla site to be created, configured, populated, and uploaded there is a low, flat fee, payable in three instalments.

Q:  Do you teach how to install or use Joomla?

A:  Yes! Because Joomla runs on a SQL database, you need to have a server. We can help you set up and configure a home server on your own computer, using Apache XAMPP or WAMP. Then Joomla can be installed and configured. If that's all you need to get you going, that's fine! We're glad to help.

The one thing about Joomla that is key to understanding how it works, is that on a Joomla site, there are no such things as "pages." There is only content, organized in different ways. If you need a basic tutorial, we can do that, too. Please inquire about rates.

If home server, Apache, SQL, and database sound like scary things to have to learn, just relax and know that you will benefit from a patient teacher. It was all new to us at one time, too!
